What my Confessions are All About

As women, our lives are full of expectations. Expectations come at us from everywhere. We are supposed to be the perfect wife, mother, friend, employee, etc, but somehow, despite our best efforts, we never make it to perfection. This blog is an attempt for me illustrate some of my imperfections, hang-ups, struggles, and hardships while still realizing that I'm only human. And that's okay.

Do You Pass the Test?

So, I didn't write this and I don't know who did. I got it from a friend of mine who emailed it to me. I thought it was cute!

*The Mom Test*

I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that.
'Why?' my daughter asked.
'Because it's been on the ground, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs' I replied.
At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, 'Momma, how do you know all this stuff, you are so smart.'
I was thinking quickly. 'All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mom Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mom.'
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently pondering this new
information.
'OH...I get it!' she beamed, 'So if you don't pass the test you have to be the dad.'
'Exactly.' I replied back with a big smile on my face.

I don't know about you, but sometimes, I am darn pleased with myself and the answers I come up with for my kids. Sometimes I think I am absolutely brilliant because an idea comes to me and the kids actually love it. Sometimes we actually have days go by here when no child gets put in time out and they actually help clean up their room before bed time.

Other times, I know I fail "The Mom Test" miserably. I often wish that I was a doctor, a psychologist, an accountant, a plumber, a car mechanic, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, and an elementary school teacher as well as being a mother. If I was all those things, then I would have all the answers. Right? I would know when to take my kids to the doctor. I would know how to change my own oil in my car instead of waiting with two kids in the "oh so clean" waiting room. I wouldn't worry about Piglet saying his "L" sounds because I would know how to fix it. I could do my own taxes and feel without-a-doubt comfortable when I signed them and mailed them in.

The truth of the matter is that even if I was all those things, I wouldn't have all the answers. Things would still happen where there isn't a right answer. That's when I remind myself that I'm doing the best I can with what I have and I can always make improvements.

I love it when I come up with a brilliant answer or I struggle through a situation and then it all just clicks! Very rewarding moments and then I'm quickly humbled by the next problem and I remember that I am not the brilliant one, God is and these are his children. I'm just his hands here on earth! Great post! I especially like the little story!

I think this is a lesson that I have had to learn over and over... my brain will not let me accept that there are situations that I just won't have an answer to... it's just not possible :)

I found your blog quite by accident this afternoon as I was doing a search on the "It's been so cold lately that they turned blue," quote from Sound of Music. I wanted to make sure I'd gotten it right before I used it in a post. (Coincidentally, I'm an LDS mommy too.)

I just have to comment because I LOVE the Mommy Test story! I'm in the process of posting a similar one on my blog. It was a conversation between me and my almost five-year-old daughter. Come visit us if you'd like at www.arnesenfamily.org.

Yeah. I'm doing my best. Sometimes I pass, sometimes I fail - miserably.

Lovely post. :)
